OK, I know I'm a little late but I have a good excuse... Happy New Year! Some projects this month that we're really excited about - kind of makes the long hours and little sleep worth it right? That's what we tell ourselves anyways.. Here are a few progress shots of what's been going down in Tsunami town this the past few weeks:

A new design for wall artwork going up in a hotel in California.. I don't know what it is about this simple leaf shape but its popping up a lot in our work these days, some large colorful ones will be going up in a hospital soon as well cascading down a lobby wall -a run of colored Maki cylinders for a really cool new client, one of my fashion idols, more on that later.. - monster annealers - donor wall for a recreation center - and a new desk made from a glass crucible (my 3 year old son took the photo - sorry, had to put that out there from this proud mum!)...

We've wanted to do this for a long long time - use those annealing ovens for something productive (like pizza!), and what better time than to celebrate the holidays. The other day we took a breather to cook in our shop and teach our fabulous studio manager and expert polisher how to make some glass. Happy Holidays everyone!

We're in the process of building some new equipment that will enable us to double our capacity. There is something very exciting about business growth (aside from the obvious of course! sustainability, keeping our employees busy and happy, the opportunity to buy new shoes.. - ahem, there has to be a point to why we're working so hard right?! OK, I'm playing into the girly girl stereotype but well, I do love a nice shoe or two), and the fact that we're doing this all from our own sweat and tears. With not being a seasonal business we've been running full steam ahead - be careful what you wish for right?!

Some cool updates from my partner Kris's side - we've been working with an engineer to recoup some more of the heat lost from the furnaces, this should decrease our energy consumption by 20%. Kris is big on making the shop run as efficiently as possible, glass making is a very energy hungry process! We've built some new large annealer's and the larger glass furnace is on its way. At the end of December we will be test melting some recycled, waste glass and off cuts from our glass pieces. The items made from this run will be considered 100% recycled, and will be made as a limited run available for sale in January. We're not sure what colour we'll end up with (my guess is a cool, wintery grey)! Check in again with us next month for some updates...

Inspired by winter, this glass panel will be one of 5 inspired by the seasons, going up in a new hospital in Barrie, Ontario in the cancer treatment rooms. Patients will have some distraction and hopefully have something serene to look at while they're getting treatment. I'm sure everyone has been touched in some way by cancer, the statistics are crazy. I wish my aunt, who passed away 2 years ago from a second battle with breast cancer, had been treated in a hospital like this one - I feel pretty lucky to be working on this project, at least I can maybe help make a small difference for someone else going through cancer treatment.

Hypervoxels are a means to render different particle animation effects. Basically its the ability to generate appearances that mimic blobby metaballs for things like water or mercury, including reflection or refraction surface settings in the animation program Lightwave. Hence the blobby, liquid shapes of our chandelier design, and then translated into the glass, it relates to glass being a liquid... we like to call it as it is folks (.. tubes, soft box.. etc..)

Its ok, everyone knows we're both big nerds!

We've been doing a little local exploring lately; business has had us pretty tethered from traveling too far this past year and maybe I'm finally accepting our move from Toronto to Windsor back in 2005...! On our way to some country markets this weekend we passed the Windsor Salt mine, a product that was always in my kitchen growing up and even as a kid I loved the design of this packaging. Funny, the design always made me think the salt came from some far away place with castles called Windsor (ok I was 5, and Windsor does have a pretty famous castle, just not the Windsor in Ontario..or Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick or Newfoundland - why are there so many of the same names in Canada for a city - it can get confusing!), never did I think I would ever be living where they made the stuff. Anyways, I wanted to talk about Chris Yaneff not Canadian geography (which by the way is also a subject I love)..

Chris Yaneff’s beautiful packaging design for Windsor Salt, seemingly inspired by formalist painters like Piet Mondrian, Konstantin Malevich, and Ellsworth Kelly, became a staple in Canadian households for more than 40 years.Windsor Salt recently abandoned Yaneff’s model in favour of a more representational approach, a move that’s caused mass hand-wringing within the Canadian design community. The Toronto based firm specialized in logo design and created some of Canada’s most visible and recognizable logos to date. Simple and modern was the successful design approach and lead to multiple awards and national attention, below are some others that you might recognize:

We're thrilled to be included in a full two page spread (page 115 and 116) in L'Altro Uomo, a UK based Men's style and culture book which is published two times a year. L'ALTRO UOM O was created by Fashion Designer and Entrepreneur Jerry Osei-Tutu. The book is uniquely aimed at contemporary men and is published in several different languages which include Italian, French and Chinese; each issue is concentrated around a captivating theme. Kris recently added some perennials to the pots outside our studio (these pots are the crucibles from our glass furnace.. two years of our operating history on our front step! - and three in our backyard..), and finished the raised garden beds at our home. I love the idea of an edible ornamental garden (what's the point if you can't eat it?), and we've been enjoying delicious fresh greens everyday.

the middle plant here is evidence of my green (or lack of) thumb, I like it though, it reminds me to push forward.. its not perfect but its still alive..

I'm working on some designs for some large glass panels that will be going up on site late this summer. These have a nature/landscape theme dealing with the seasons of our area, southern Ontario. Some believe that being around nature and specifically the colour green, can affect a person’s state of mind and perhaps even his or her health. Science has suggested that color isn’t just pretty—it’s a mood-changing, blood-pressure-altering phenomenon. Works for me...

Definitely one of the perks of living wherewe do, there are so many little gems all within a few hours driving distance, andthere really is a huge glass industry history in our area. According to the all knowing Wikipedia..Toledo is known as the GlassCity because of its long history of innovation in all aspects of the glassindustry: windows,bottles, windshields,constructionmaterials, and glass art, which the Toledo Museum of Art has a large collection.Several large glass companies have their origins here. Owens-Illinois,OwensCorning, Libbey Glass, Pilkington North America (formerly LibbeyOwens Ford), and Therma-Tru have long been a staple of Toledo's economy.

We went to seethe Toledo Glass Pavilion, glass studio and museum for a little inspiration. The building itself is so beautiful and one of my favorites, designed by Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa from S A N A A, my piddly iphone didn't do the space justice.. check out images of the building here.. some favorites from our trip:

What a treat it was to get this photo from my old friend glass artist Tanya Lyons the other day! Tanya makes really beautiful sculptural dresses incorporating blown glass, metal and found objects. I might have begged and pleaded to have made a special, totally unique and unconventional dress for my wedding when Kris and I got married in 2004... She made something just for me with her own unique flair. I never really was a white poofy dress kind of girl, and you only do this once (well, hopefully) so you might as well do something different! These works meditate on traditional ideas and techniques and are reinterpreted in a contemporary context, proposing a new unique and visual language which reflects today’s cosmopolitan way of living. We all drool over Dutch design here in the studio, and having someone in the shop who lived there is even cooler - especially because we get to hear about all the different sprinkles there are for bread - sorry, food precedes design usually for me! (chocolate sprinkles on toast anyone?!! And these pink candy sprinkles that I can't remember the name of but look great for breakfast, or anytime really).. They're from Gouda (just hearing the name makes me hungry) and recently shared this image of this amazing glass tree made with hundreds of glass drops. Beautiful!

Rain Chandelier

Installed in our clients home is our newest sculptural light installation. Made up of multiple gold colored blown glass drops, the chandelier hangs approximately 10 feet down.

We've been working with a Toronto lighting company lately who did the lighting for the Thompson hotel in Toronto, and also for Scarpetta, the restaurant in the hotel. I stumbled on the website and there they are (hiding under the canopy but still...)! Our massive globes! I think this chandelier has 60 or so 15" globes, so you get the idea of the scale. I should take a photo next time I'm in the area but here is one off the website in the meantime..
